In a terminal run:
	top

right click the top bar and select:
	Always on visible work space

and watch your performance. If you use alot of swap (see below) then
you may need to use less programs or get more RAM.

top:
Tasks: 169 total, 2 running, 167 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu0 : 2.2%us, 3.6%sy, 0.4%ni, 93.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si,
0.0%st
Cpu1 : 0.6%us, 9.6%sy, 0.3%ni, 89.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si,
0.0%st
Mem: 3731452k total, 3335668k used, 395784k free, 166612k buffers
Swap: 7815612k total, 0k used, 7815612k free, 1089936k cached
                              ^^^
notice mem is almost taxed but still hasn't used swap. I do the same as
you, 4 desktops running upwards of a dozen programs at times. Hope this
helps.
