g++ compiler help

I have just installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 desktop and am wanting to install 
the g++ compiler.
I do not have internet connection on my Linux machine.
I have tried the code: /sudo aptitude install build-essential /with the 
install CD but this does not work.
I'm new to Linux so I'm not sure about what to do.
