nearly correct, but in this case, PATH in ubuntu contains /sbin
and /usr/sbin by default.
the raw disk nodes though (/dev/sdX) are owned by root and the disk
group (to which no user belongs since that would be a massive security
hole) so you need to use sudo if you want to read raw partitioning data
from it.
