setup not detecting partition

NO horror stories from my side :)  You say you tried to re-install 
Ubuntu, to me this means you already have Ubuntu somewhere on that
box's hard disk.

While in the installer, you get the opportinity to manually
partition your hd, select that option.  In case you're still
stuck come back and I'll give you the URL of a screenshot I have
ready.
