Thanks for the hint... led me to this place here: 
http://www.ollisalonen.com/btnx/ and come to find out that it's
available in the repositories.  Just do an 'sudo apt-get install btnx'
in the terminal and it will add btnx-config as well.  At least it give
me the functions that I want, but the switching of the button
configurations isn't automatic but I can live with that...
