xorg problems on new machine

So, do you now have a pretty spartan xorg.conf file?  If so, try
putting 'Driver: "ati"' in the 'Device' section.

Do you have anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?  Can you at least get to
VT1 to check?

PS: somewhat related - I had a ton of trouble with the fglrx driver
and 9.04 recently on my wife's laptop - apparently, ATI and the new
Xorg server have conspired to make 3D accel really suck on a bunch of
older models.  I was unable to get any sort of display up with the
fglrx driver.  The 'ati' driver came up, but the 3D was very poor
quality.  I ended up rolling back to 8.10 to make 3D usable.  I shant
be purchasing any ATI cards in the forseeable future
