xorg problems on new machine

I can understand fully... first off, does the screen still look normal
on a liveCD? also, are you using the proprietary card drivers, or the
open (vesa) drivers?  If you're using the proprietary ATI driver, i'd
recommend rolling back to the free drivers with a fresh (or absent)
xorg.conf and see what that does.  If it works, then you can try
reinstalling the proprietary drivers, carefully.

Remember, if uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver, remember to purge
it, rather than just deleting it.
