This sound a lot like a power supply failure to me. It happened to my
buddy's computer a little while back... he started getting anomalous
filesystem errors every now and then, and finally his computer stopped
booting. Turned out that his power supply had gone on the fritz, and
was giving his computer a fluctuating power level. The issue went away
as soon as we put a new power supply in it.
just my 2 cents
