If you create partitions before you install Ubuntu you then have to
do a manual install to get ubuntu into your chosen partitions.
The method I prefer is to re size windows partition first to create a
space on the drive which is unused - *no partition*, just unallocated
space.
I then install Ubuntu and use the option
'Guided partitioning - Use largest unused space on drive'
Consider using the live CD and its partition editor to identify the
new ubuntu partitions and delete them all, being careful to retain the
windows partition.
When you have a windows partition and some empty space with no
partition, then use the ubuntu install and choose the above option.
