Yes, I know. I was running the closed source driver in Ubuntu 8.10 
without problems. So, the "new" (9.04) Ubuntu should have known which 
driver I using and upgrade to the right one, or not?

Yes, but the Hardware Drivers tool (System->Administration->Hardware 
Drivers) tells me "No proprietary drivers in use on this system" :-(
