scanner

Recently I asked the list to help me in my search for a new scanner.
Some persons mentioned various machines but, in general, the advice was
to go to a website where there is a long list of scanners and their
compatibility with Linux. This seemed a good idea so, armed with the
specification, price and availability and Linux compatibility, I settled
down to a bit of research. Eventually I found a scanner which I could
afford and was available and, even better, was listed as being
completely compatible with Linux.

Fool that I am. The scanner arrived today, was unpacked, plugged in and
XSane started only to be told that the scanner could not be found. After
all the good advice I had followed I was no better off than if I had
taken a pin and plunged it blindfolded into a list of scanners.
Fortunately, I have a son who lives about 500Km away but who knows his
way around Ubuntu like the back of his hand. It took him about 15
minutes to sort things out and now I have a device that works. Without
his help what on earth would I have done?
