Are the lock files that Open Office now creates causing your problem? 
When I installed the newest version of Open Office on a brand new vista 
computer around Christmas it couldn't open the open office files.  i 
think I had to change samba settings to allow access to dot files.  I 
usually make notes when I fix things like that but I can't find them.
