i love mplayer too and i love it as the backend that runs geexbox but no one
yet has answered this person yet where to tell the OS that HE/SHE wants vlc
which also is a great player i may add... to run as the PRIMARY media
player. in my case...

This goes through the steps to set up Ubuntu for all kinds of multimedia
stuff, from playing DVD's to MP3's.  There's even a section in there
that will tell you how to make VLC the default movie player...
