Hi John,
in a previous email you said your modem details were  ACM3
In the "port" you should have ttyACM3   NOT ttyS2
If all your details are correct to connect after closing the pppconfig,
Open a terminal and type  pon  this should connect you,  to disconnect  
in terminal type  poff
