it only asks this question if you edited menu.lst in a non standard
place (like the kernel commandlines directly for example)

if you edit menu.lst, make sure to only change the line that starts
like:
# kopt=root= ....

(!!! *dont* remove the hash sign at the beginning !!!)

and run sudo update-grub

that will make sure the changes get applied to the kernel lines ... next
time you update a kernel package ucf (the app dpkg uses to check if
config files changed) wont ask you but just apply your changes
properly...
