I'm thinking your monitor is providing faulty EDID information, and that
's screwing the driver over.

I suppose you could try specifying a monitor with the displayconfig-gtk
program.  However, i would urge trying to plug a different monitor into
the computer... even if it's a notebook, you should be able to use an
external display, and see if that works as expected.
