Screen resolution loop [help!]

!!! No kidding. But it helps to hear someone else say it. Something's messed 
up, fer shur. :c) Still not sure what 'it' could be, at this point though.

All that stuff I mentioned above was stuff that happened *after* I ran xfix, 
and resumed booting. The Ubuntu menu under System>Admin *shows* Hardware
Drivers, as expected, but selecting the options offered doesn't seem to have any
observable
effect.

Sadly, no. The maximum resolution offered remains 800x600. The xorg.conf file 
in my working Ubuntu Hardy machine (workhorse3) doesn't contain anything much
different looking from the xorg.conf file on the messed up machine 
(workhorse5). Color me confused.

At least, it's getting to be time for supper!
