How to make Ubuntu extremely fast

Usually for casual desktop technicians and users I would suggest two things :

1) RAM is significant performance boost. Those performance would agreeably better as double the RAM size.
2) Choosing a better filesystem would further boost performances. I would prefer reiserfs, xfs, or jfs.

I guess that would sum it up.
