desktop shortcut to files

on LTS 6.06 my network files had shortcuts form the desktop. I don't 
know if I created them or not. With 8.04 the only one that appears on 
the desktop is a shared drive that is a external hard drive the other 
NFS files do not have shortcuts and after a lot of searching I still 
can't figure out how to recreate the desktop short cut. Just wondering 
if anyone knows how to do it. It is nice because it alerted the user if 
they needed to remount the nfs shares.
