Ok, can you access it from a windows box?

If you want to test samba without much trouble, just hit CTRL+L at your
desktop, a location box should appear.

Then, inside it, erase the content and type "smb://ip.of.the.hdd" (without
quotes).

That should make it accessible at least as a read-only. If the access is ok
(read/write) another tip would be placing a fstab entry on your system.
