well, it is not according to the books, but it worked for me:
Get the latest Knoppix DVD. Boot from this and use
"knoppix screen=1280x1024 depth=32" (without quotes) at the boot
prompt. Surely this is just an example of the resoultion and color
depth that you will need to choose. Then boot Knoppix.
If you are lucky (most of the time you are) Knoppix will start up a
nice looking KDE configured to use "your" resolution. Now transfer
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to somewhere safe, maybe to a usb stick or to a
different computer.
Shut down Knoppix, boot up Ubuntu and use your Knoppix generated
xorg.conf (do not forget to do a backup copy of the orignal file, before).
