In Ubuntu, we use sudo instead of su. There is some good information
about at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
What kind of trouble are you having with the network configuration? Are
you using a wired or wireless setup?
Someone else will help with the hard disk, since I don't know much
about it. They may help with the network, too, if you give the much
needed information to help out.
