Actually, I had two RAID failures this summer.  Both IBM ServRAID
hardware cards...

My only other comment is this - what do you think runs on that RAID
card?  Closed source proprietary software.  Just because they call it
'firmware' doesn't necessarily mean it's bug free.  Software RAID
relies on hardware drive controllers, just like Hardware RAID relies
on software.

Now, I can't claim extensive experience either way, but I have seen
comments by people I trust that feel software RAID is a valid
alternative.

OK I swear - no more. :-)   The OP has long since decided to /dev/null
me I'm sure.
