Many thanks Karl.

Unfortunately, before seeing your mail, I'd started a re-install of 
Windows. When this is done, I'll try to install a dual boot w/ Ubuntu 
again.  And if this destroys the XP partition again, I'll just try to 
get my XP working as before on this m/c.  And hopefully get to Ubuntu 
later on another one.  Which I'll have to buy.  ;(
