Hi NoOp,
I have just written 3 dvd's as a test, 2 -R and 1 +R all are
readable. The same files that are on the unreadable discs transfered
from xp machine via memstick.
Am starting to think may be the dvd's I used were defective, they were
the last on the spindle (Sony) That doesn't gell though as they were all
readable on the old XP machine.

Fstab
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

lshw output for the 2 drives . Don't know if it's important, but no
reference to
dvd+r .
