Before you do that, did you start in recovery mode and
select the 4th item, "Xfix, then reboot to see if that
fixed your issue. Your experience very much matches
mine and I always had to run xfix to resolve it.
Easier to do, if it works, than reinstalling. In my
experience, you can run without "xorg.conf"(just rm
it) if you have run "nvidia-xconfig" and the file
"xorg.config" was generated in your "/etc/X11" dir.
The xorg.config should have the nvidia driver that you
selected listed in it. Good luck.
