I have Gnome, KDE, KDE4, and Xubuntu all on this laptop.  At the login window 
(which for me is Gnome which came with the pre-install) there is options in 
the bottom left which I canuse to change the session.  I normally use Kubuntu 
(3.9.10) but enjoy playing in the 4.1 version too!  BTW- there is no 
gnome-desktop in synaptic, it is ubuntu-desktop, but yes you can install it, 
either also or instead.
