What do you mean by 'use your root password'?  Typically in Ubuntu you 
access root by using 'sudo', as in 'sudo su'.  Doing it that way lets 
you enter your own password to authenticate your user as having access 
to root privileges. That's not the same as using 'su' which requires the 
root password.
