Hit Alt-F2 and type "thunderbird" if Thunderbird (Icedove) isn't in the 
menu system. To get it into the menu system, do "sudo update-menus" from 
a terminal.

Yes, that is hard to believe. Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list?
