tx for quick response: saved my day !

I just did what you proposed, but downloads were very slow. I ssh-ed and
could do ssh -X machine so I could choose a repo server closer to home. I
could even do in Synaptic some updates.

Last step was to repeat the steps you mentioned, and now the machine is
happily updating.

Hopefully this will be the last round.
