And if it's hanging _after_ getting the password (don't you need to give
update-manager the password before it starts downloading?) that just seems
to be typical of any of the apt methods.  I find that anything that causes
slowdowns on the download will tend to hang the apt process.  From work,
it's notorious - I can wget the file in seconds, but frequently get hung
forever using any package manager.  otoh, from home, where I have a tenth
of the bandwidth, I rarely have a problem.  It _seems_ to be related to the
fact that there's some bandwidth throttling on the work connection - I
can't get more than 100kBps for more than about a minute before it
throttles me down to 10k or less.
