I am under the impression that OpenOffice 3 can edit PDFs, but haven't
tried it.

To install OO3, you can either use the semi-official ppa repository, at
least for 8.10, dunno about 8.04

Or you can visit the OO.org website and use their method. The list
archives of October also contain lots of discussion about installing OO3
