It's hard for me to tell where you're having the problem. It sounds to me
like you're saying you can't boot into Ubuntu, but when you do, x, y, and z
won't work.
Are you getting to a bootscreen that looks something like this?

Is it a real DOS prompt, some error before you the boot loader runs or are
you getting past the bootloader and then getting a Linux Bash prompt? This
is stuff I can't tell.
At the prompt can you type startx and see what happens?
I probably won't be able to help you, but with more imformation I can assure
you people on this list will be able to, so hang in there and look for ways
to provide as much detail as possible.
If you still have Windows on the computer you might want to try installling
from Windows with http://wubi-installer.org/ and using both until you feel
confident.
Let's start with one problem--getting you into Ubuntu--and then work on the
other issues.
