Difficult in installing Drivers with new Ubuntu 8.10

Hello,

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 afresh on my machine and somehow I cann't install
Nvidia drivers using System->Adminstration->Hardware-Drivers.  When I click
Activate, one pop-up menu comes and disappers and nothing is downloaded and
installed.  One side effect I observed is that my browser become offline
after clicking "Activate" button.  This behavior was not observed when
upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10, but show up only in the fresh installation.
