sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xgl

I run a Radon Mobility 7500 on my T30 laptop & after blowing out -xgl,
installing the standard -ati drivers (no fglx either), and modifing my
xorg.conf slightly, it now zips right along (well I won't call 772 FPS
in glxgears blazing... but) & runs all the Compiz bells & whistles.
