Compiz as a composite manager needs an X server that provides 3D
acceleration to the window manager. Xgl and AIGLX are competing projects
that allow the X server to do this. Xgl was developed mainly by Suse,
but AIGLX was favored by the xorg people and so it quickly won. Xgl is
now unmaintained, and all relevant 3D-accelerated drivers include AIGLX
