Have you tried the Debian Sid driver module in Ubuntu. It should be compatible with Hardy, I think. If not you can just remove it.
If you are just putting your resolution issue on hold for a while, these may be of interest. There is a Linux .tar.gz driver file for your chip. Just google for "intel 865" and you'll find these and many more. HTH.
