As the other poster has mentioned, your best bet appears to boot the
laptop with the monitor attached. Perhaps others will contribute with
other ideas.
BTW, what graphics card are you using?
Having said that, have you considered upgrading to the current version
of Ubuntu (Hardy, 8.04)?
