Resume from suspend problems

OK I got ubuntu 8.04 server installed. I added XFCE desktop and tried
to suspend the machine. The fans stopped and it got really quiet. I
then tried to start it back up and I don't have any video. No signal is
being sent to the monitor at all. I can ssh into the machine. When I
try to reboot from ssh I get:
jhubbard at everest:~$ reboot
-bash: /sbin/reboot: cannot execute binary file
I get the same thing with halt, sudo halt, and sudo reboot.

The first question is how do I safely reboot off the machine? The
second question is what do I have to do to get suspend to work properly?

btw the video card is a gforce 7300 gs. I am running the default driver.

To be or not to be, that is the question
                2b || !2b
(0b10)*(0b1100010) || !(0b10)*(0b1100010)
        0b11000100 || !0b11000100
        0b11000100 || 0b00111011
               0b11111111
        255, that is the answer.
