Vista Backup and Ubuntu Samba

Im no sure if the complexity is actually your problem.

I suppose its possible, but I have noticed quite a bit of trouble
comunicating with samba from ubuntu on a Vista machine so its seems to
me that it might just be that M$ decided to change samba a bit.

And the results you are seeing might be Vista requireing those changes
to work 100%.
