I had such problem too. The culprit was the wireless driver; I found
such hint on Ubuntu forums. First I blacklisted it: created
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-wireless (filename does not matter, the
directory does) with the contents:

blacklist iwl4965

This helped, but I was not able to use wifi of course. Later I
installed linux-backport-modules-hardy which comes with an updated
iwl4965 module (it can be checked with modinfo: old was 1.2.0, new is
1.2.25). This helped too, without having to blacklist the module, so
wifi actually works and the laptop no longer hangs.
