I think it referred to modem interface, not connection interface. I have USB modem and its modem interface is /dev/ttyUSB0.

Why don't you tried wvdial to make sure your modem works first? I remember it is already in ubuntu.

sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Don't forget to edit /etc/wvdial.conf and depending on your ISP you might want to add this line :

Stupid mode = Yes
