Can't install vmware tools - why?

When I select "VM->Install VMWare tools" and click "Install", it is
supposed to set up a new mounted filesystem in the guest with the tools
on it, ready to install.

However, no new filesystem or device is appearing as far as I can tell.
Note that I am doing this at the command line (the guest is a 8.04
server install), so none of the HowTos are worth much :-(

Anyone have a clue as to what step I might be missing, or can tell me
what exact device is supposed to be set up (maybe I can mount it
manually)?

Regards, K.
