Thanks for the info and suggestions. I removed NetworkManager.
Unfortunately, I should have installed wicd at the same time because I
lost a gui tool to establish a wired connections. Fortunately I
remembered how to get a DHCP connection on the command line using
"dhclient eth0".
I installed WICD (after enabling the intrepid extras repository and
installing the gpg key and doing an apt-get update [in order to enable
the repository]). I installed wicd and set up for my home network. I
will try the WPA connection when I go back to the office on Monday. The
settings panels seem straight forward. I'm able to switch easily between
the wired and wireless connections (something that does not work when
using NM with a static wired connection, at least not on Fedora 8).
