gnome application launcher -- keeps running in background

Must be gnome in general then, as I've done the same (in Gnome) using
Gnome Terminal, Terminal, and Konsole with the same results - continues
in background. In actuality it continues the download even if the status
monitor shows it as 'sleeping'; I switched to the wireless laptop & can
watch the download continuing on the router. The download only stops if
I 'killall wget'.

Tried to do it via KDE, but for some reason all I am getting for KDE on
the laptop (intrepid) is a KDE4 mouse cursor on a black screen... ah the
wonders of new software.
