(Just for the record, in case it helps anybody to diagnose possible
problems in the upgrade process)

/lib/modules/2.6.25-2-386/kernel/sound/ does contain:

ac97_bus.ko soundcore.ko

I obviously have no idea why these weren't being picked up.. :-(

No, my system is almost entirely vanilla, I don't dare mess with
installing kernels or modules myself. :-)

*Many thanks*, I did just that and installed that kernel image package
(which brought in a firmware package and another one which I've
forgotten already (kernel-headers, perhaps?)) and now my sound is
working again absolutely perfectly!

I do really appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this.
Now I can listen to the radio or to music on my computer again! :-D

I can only wonder why the upgrade didn't work properly in this regard.

Thanks again for all your help,

David.
