I think you will find this helpful; but just as in the windows world
where you clean a registry, files, et al, you use with caution:

<http://maketecheasier.com/8-ways-to-maintain-a-clean-lean-ubuntu-machine/2008/10/07>

Words of caution:

fslint (mentioned in the page) is a very powerful tool with very little
documentation. *Unless you know what you are doing* _do not_ use this
tool. I quite like the tool, but you can very easily hose your system by
deleting things you shouldn't, so if you do use it, use it with caution.

I'd also recommend caution with localepurge. Again, a very useful tool,
but be sure that you understand what you are removing. Putting locales
back onto your system is definitely more difficult than removing them.

And, unless you really need the diskspace I'd just recommend you keep
things as they are until you decide that you're ready to start
'cleaning' files & capable of cleaning up the mess afterwards in case
things go wrong :-)

Safe:
1) Analyze your disk usage
3) Clean up your package installation
4) Get rid of old residual config package
Startup Manager

Semi-safe:
5) Remove orphaned package
Most of the time there are no ill effects that I am aware of. However I
suppose there is alway the possibility that the program could remove
something it shouldn't. Works well for me up to and including hardy,
I've not tried it on intrepid.
