system that had both icedtea and sun java installed - the icedtea

was working.

I'd remove these:
i icedtea-java7-plugin - Java plugin based on IcedTea and gcjwebplu
i java-gcj-compat - Java runtime environment using GIJ
i A java-gcj-compat-headless - Java runtime environment using GIJ (headle

FWIW, here's the output from the same command on my Intrepid install:
i A java-common - Base of all Java packages
i ooobasis3.0-javafilter - Java filter module for OpenOffice.org 3.0
i A sun-java6-bin - Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (
i A sun-java6-jre - Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (
i sun-java6-plugin - The Java(TM) Plug-in, Java SE 6
