windows completely disappear when "minimize" button clicked

The programs are not gone, they are minimized.  That is what is
supposed to happen--they don't show.  You can be sure they are not
dead if you open a terminal and run "ps aux" to list all programs and
see that they are still running.

If your user can't find the running program, try these things.

1. Use whatever key combination is set to cycle through running
programs.  On many systems, it is Alt-Tab.

2. in the panel, add an applet that monitors and lists programs.
There's nothing automatic in a panel that lists programs, but you can
right click, add applet, and there are 2 window list applets.  One is
called "Window List" and the other "Window Selector".
