8.10: SiS AC'97 soundcard no longer detected

Hi,

I've just done an in-place upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10, and my soundcard,
which never had any previous problems (my system is about 3 years old
and has no fancy/unusual hardware that I'm aware of), now isn't working.
That's actually not entirely true: if I boot the live CD, it will detect
and use the soundcard, but on booting the installed OS, it doesn't seem
to be detected.

There is no sound on the login screen, and after I login, the GNOME
volume control has the mute mark on it, and does not pop-up when you
click on it. (If I double-click the volume control, I get "No volume
control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.")

>From lspci, the soundcard (onboard on the mobo) is:

00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0)

Can anybody offer any advice on how I can get the system to re-detect my
soundcard? It does seem strange that it works fine with the live CD, but
not on the real system!

Thanks,

David.
